Area 2

In area 2 already in 2005 was uncovered one half of a quadratically shaped pit (see results 2005 - area 2) filled with earth rich in humus and a big amount of little stones, animal bones and pottery sherds. The ceramic material dates to the 10th to 12th cent. A.D.

In 2006 the second part of the structure first was excavated until the level of the last year and after this 100 cm deeper in all four quadrants. Not until the last excavation week it could be pointed out that this feature was not - as suggested - a pit house but a well whose final excavation was postponed to the next season.

The well consists out of a qudratically shaped construction pit in whose center was built a tunnel of big stones down to the groundwater level (see fig. 1). The interspace between the pit and the inner stone circle was filled with bigger stones which were also found in the tunnel itself embedded in a lot of filling earth.

The big amount of pottery sherds and animal bones must be understood as the later filling after the using when the well was used as a waste deposit. The construction time still can not precised so far, but wooden remains which are expected at the bottom of the feature probably will allow an exact dating by dendrochronological analysis after the next season. Also lost coins, tools or even jewellery pieces might be preserved in the well.

As special finds of the season 2006 there should be mentioned a little blue coloured glass bead, a bone tool, some loom weights consisting out of clay, weights made of bronce and other metal finds. They were emebedded in the filling levels and can not be related to the construction time of the well. First hints for a more precise dating are expected by C14-analysis in the near future. Due to drillings in the surrounding for the well can be expected a depth of at least 3m. This object stands as a unique feature in the region and it´s examination is very important for archeological knowledge.
